Introducing the Stroke Recovery in Motion Planner
March of Dimes Canada is committed to the design and delivery of evidence informed services. Partnerships with other organizations and research teams outside of MODC help bring new innovations and practical applications to the communities we serve.
That’s why our organization, in collaboration with a Canadian research team funded by the Brain Canada Foundation, is hosting the new Stroke Recovery in Motion Planner on our website.
Experts in healthcare recommend continued exercise for regaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle after stroke. In 2016, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Partnership for Stroke Recovery identified that while there have been great strides made in stroke treatment and rehabilitation, stroke survivors do not always have access to specially adapted exercise programs once they return to their communities.
That’s where the Stroke Recovery in Motion (SRiM) Planner can help. The SRiM planner was developed by a Canadian research team through a research grant funded by the Brain Canada Foundation, to develop an evidence-informed, step-by-step toolkit designed to help anyone interested in developing and providing community-based physical activity programs for people with stroke. These include:
- Health service coordinators
- Community program managers and leaders
- Health professionals
- Fitness professionals
- Advisory groups
- People impacted by stroke
Whether you are a novice who is developing your first community-based physical activity program or a leader who has delivered physical activity programs for decades, you’ll benefit from this detailed resource.

- Checklists for each stage to ensure no steps are missed or skipped
- Ideas on how to engage with key stakeholders, including community members impacted by stroke (caregivers, family, friends), fitness professionals, community leaders, stroke advocacy groups, and community organization staff
- Ways to identify barriers and find solutions to program barriers
- Help on choosing an exercise program that meets the specific needs for your community
